The paper presents the spatial and socio-economic transformation of one of Warsaw’s large-scale housing estates – Sluzew nad Dolinka, especially after 1989. In spite of potential threat of physical and social degradation, the area has not converted into a city slum and still offers attractive living conditions for its inhabitants. Continuous and regular actions of the local housing association, city authorities, entrepreneurs and dwellers, as well as propitious circumstances of the Warsaw real estate market, protect the estate from physical and social decline

In recent years, the largest Polish cities have experienced intensive suburbanization processes. People migrate to suburban communes and hitherto undeveloped areas change their function towards single- or multi-family residential neighbourhoods. Spontaneous and dispersed suburbanization processes (urban sprawl) have many negative consequences that might become a serious problem, not only for the inhabitants but also for the local authorities in the suburban areas. The article presents the results of the evaluation of the role of Cohesion Policy projects in counteracting negative effects of suburbanization processes in potential suburban zones of the largest Polish cities. The results of the evaluation indicate that in suburban areas there is a major focus on meeting the current needs of residents, whereas strategic prevention of negative effects of suburbanization processes is neglected

Contemporary, postmodern cities are cities of consumption, rather than of production. While for industrial cities typical spatial model was a factory, for consumption cities it is a shopping centre – a place where people can meet all their needs, not only by shopping and entertaining, but also by social interaction and creating and confirming their identity. Although shopping centers are privately owned, they are perceived and used as public spaces – mostly because they look like traditional urban spaces (shopping streets, markets etc.). Shopping centres not only visually imitate public space, but also functionally substitute it, and physically and symbolically appropriate. Shopping centers are also major competitors for traditional shopping streets, both in economic and social dimension, also by increasing standards and users’ expectations. The aim of the paper (in Polish) was to analyse relations between shopping centres and urban public space based on the results of qualitative studies on Warsaw shopping centres

The aim of the paper is to analyze the functional transformation of the main Warsaw shopping streets in 1996-2010 in terms of their retail and services offer. The analysis was based on data on business entities of selected branches located in Warsaw downtown. The analyzed period was a time of dynamic transformation of Warsaw retail landscape, mostly related to the modernization of that sector and the emergence of large commercial buildings. It was also a period of intense transformation of the city’s functional structure, as well as significant economic and social changes related with post-socialist transformation
